Our Beginnings
Our founding owner, Edward Canter, discovered his passion for the dental industry in his high school years working for a dental laboratory in Hartford, Connecticut. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy and completed his formalized training in dental assistance and dental technology. Edward went on to become a Certified Dental Technician in 1962.
After serving his country, Edward worked for a local dental laboratory for a brief time. He then opened his first lab in a dentist’s office in Torrington, Connecticut. His business thrived for many years until it was destroyed in the historical flood of 1955 that impacted several towns in Connecticut, including Torrington.
In 1956 Edward opened his new dental laboratory in Hartford on Albany Avenue, outside of downtown in the “suburbs” of Hartford, Connecticut and named the business Suburban Dental Laboratory, Inc.
Three Generations of Experience and Excellence
Edward’s youngest son Steven joined the business in 1976 as a summer employee. Steven’s passion for the dental field led him to pursue formal training at Eli Whitney Technical School and became a Certified Dental Technician in 1982.
Steven has continued to manage the full service dental laboratory with his father’s strong ethics, hard work, quality dental restorations, and excellent customer service. Suburban Dental Laboratory, Inc. has entered its third generation with Steve’s son Adam joining the business in July 2006.
He attended Eli Whitney Technical School and is currently pursuing a business degree. Adam’s role at Suburban Dental Laboratory continues to evolve along with the technology in the dental field. He shares his father and grandfather’s passion for the dental industry.

In 2004 Suburban Dental Laboratory moved to a brand new state of the art facility located at 4 Barnard Lane, Bloomfield, Connecticut.
